Batik fun - fish and feathers

What a fabulous day. Carol Page, a member of our quilt group and an art teacher, rented her classroom from the secondary school that she teaches in and organised a batik workshop yesterday. It was lovely to be in such a large room with high work benches and plenty of equipment. I think we were all beginners but there was some lovely work produced by the end of the day. I finished up with this little fish which is about 6 inches square, but on the way to that worked on two samples:

This was in order to get used to the rate of flow of wax from the chantings. I was pleased with the clarity of these images on cotton.
We also worked on a really big piece on a rather rough calico which can be made into a shopping bag. I think it was about 24" square:

It's not completely ironed out or washed yet - that's a job for today!
Thanks Carol for a day of instruction, fun and cake!

  10. Isn't batik fun? And it is surprising how good your first efforts can turn out. Yours are wonderful. Reading about your first timer's enthusiasm makes me want to teach batik classes again.I haven't heated up my wax pot for about 6 months! Maybe its time again. Check out Red Lotus's website on the side bar of my blog. It sells all traditional Indonesian batik supplies, including jtaps (stamps).
