Places of Peace

I do love summer. After the children had gone to bed I stitched a little outside until 9.30pm. I like the contemplative way the needle weaves in and out of the fabric creating little peaceful ripples as it goes. A slow cloth feeds the soul.

This is the view from my little summerhouse at the bottom of the garden. I go here occasionally to be away with the fairies and to do a little light stitching or read a magazine. If I'm really lucky the children won't find me for at least ten minutes and I have some peace!

I planted a rose called "Rambling Rector" to the side of it about three years ago. This year it has come into its own. It's from David Austen English Roses which is about 5 miles from here. This plant has a real Victorian feel to it.
Where is YOUR place of peace?

  1. I'm so looking forward to seeing this piece finished.
My place is...not a place as such, it's walking the hills around here! On the tracks, I have podcasts of Woman's Hour and the Archers playing. Just come back, before it gets too hot, I feel revived and raring to go!!

  2. I like your needlework, it looks very tactile.

Now our children have grown and flown I have lots of peace and long for a bit of noise and chaos!

  4. the best thing about England, I think, is how late the sun goes down in summer (tempered of course by how early in winter -yuk). i wish i had a little summer house. the only time i get any peace is if im doing housework - everyone disappears in case i rope them in to help

  5. It's the same way here. Unfortunately there are nights I want to go to bed before the chick-chooks and they won't go into their coop until it is dark (I lock them in each night).

  6. What a lovely view from your summerhouse, I so wish I had one, maybe one day. That little squirrel, what a cheeky might! Does he wait for you to be in the hammock before he starts munching!? Jane xxx

  9. I love the sound of your little summerhouse and the view from it. We have a shed which I had hoped to use as a hideaway, but my husband has filled it with the shredder and other things which need a weatherproof home. I had visions of a very Country Living style interior!! Not a hope now. Never mind, I have a little haven in one of the bedrooms which is my work space. The piece you are working on is beautiful - I love the self coloured stitching on the various parts of the pattern, and agree with you about hand stitching. It is very therapeutic.

  11. Unfortunately only in my head at the moment. I really like your quilting/sewing in the first picture and the sentence "A slow cloth feeds the soul" a nice reminder to take our time in these rushed and rantic times.
